Ep. 158 ~ Payson McElveen

Payson McElveen probably needs no introduction. Among many of his achievements he is a Red Bull Athlete, 2x Marathon National Champion, 2x MidSouth Campion, and he is the host of the popular Adventure Stache Podcast. He’s also a wizard at production and social media which has added to his visibility.

Payson and I are both from Texas with backgrounds in mountain bike racing. As such, I was fortunate to race in a TMBRA event with him in 2017, although I wasn’t in the Open Category, and, yes, Payson did go on to win it that year. He was the talk of the town, so to speak, and I’ve watched his career since then as he’s been on an upward trajectory ever since.

I’ve also followed his career as a podcaster. We started our podcasts in close proximity to each other and I’ve always had a lot of respect for Payson’s thoughtful conversations and questions. I believe he elevates the landscape and plays an important roll in the ongoing conversations and stories that surround cycling and adventure sports.

On today’s episode we discuss a myriad of topics ranging from being a professional cyclist, to his Colorado Trail FKT attempt, and a couple crossings he’s done in Iceland and Tasmania.

Payson is a world class athlete and human and it was a pleasure to have him on the podcast.

Crossing Tasmania

MTB rider Payson McElveen aims to bring a different philosophy, one unbound by a racing mindset, to his latest expedition ride – crossing Australia’s least populated state: the island of Tasmania.
