I started following Lindsay Shepard’s journey when I saw on social media that she had built her own bike frame and was planning to race on it. To my surprise the first race she signed up for was my East Texas Showdown! Right after that, she turned her van North East and did the Gravel Doom race, in Arkansas. When she finished that race, she wasn’t done. She turned her bike around to ride the course in reverse. Thus becoming the first person to complete the DOOM Yo-Yo! For style points, she did it on a SS bike, that she built!!
What I didn’t know about Lindsay when I requested an interview, is that she’s a full time vanlifer and a lifelong adventurer. Doing cool shit on bikes and in the outdoors is nothing new to Lindsay. She attempted the Tour Divide in 2014 as an introduction to bikepacking and then in 2017 she participated in the American Trail Race. The ATR is not currently running, but it was a 5,000 mile bikepacking race that went from coast to coast. In 2017 only 13 people even tried it and Lindsay was one of them.
I quickly learned that what I knew about Lindsay before the interview was truly only the tip of the iceberg. She has been living an adventurous life for a long time and has carved out a life and lifestyle that allows for her to travel and experience this world and its people. I was endlessly fascinated by Lindsay and her collection of stories, and only slightly jealous of her nomadic lifestyle. For this episode we pulled up a bench in Caprock Canyon State Park and meandered our way through a variety of topics, again, only revealing the tip of her stories iceberg.
