I’m honored to have this years Arkansas High Country Winner, and new Women’s FKT holder, back on the podcast. Scotti Lechuga completed this years race in 5d, 10h, 49m, besting everyone in the field. For the uninitiated, the Arkansas High Country Race is quickly earning a reputation for being extremely challenging 1,000+ miles course that covers much of the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains. The conditions this year were challenging due thanks most to heavy rainfall that reached havoc on gear and racers. Scotti overcame a lot on her journey to this years big win.
Scotti always wanted to be an athlete on her journey to being a professional Road Racer she met and married her now husband, training partner, and coach, Ernie Lechuga. Her road to the becoming a pro athlete was put on hold when she became pregnant with twin boys. But that didn’t stand in her way and with the support of Ernie she was able to realize her goal of becoming a professional road cyclist. I recorded an episode with Scotti and Ernie after they set a FKT on the ARHCR for racing as a pair. You can listen to that one here.
After achieving success in road racing Scotti was not where she wanted to be in her head, something was missing. It was this missing piece that ultimately lead her on a path to victory at this years High Country Race. I asked her what her goal was before she started, “To find myself” she said.
